Accomplishments

A very successful semi-annual conference was held March 25-26, 2004 in Baltimore, Maryland. The conference was titled, "Structural Change in Commodity Checkoff Programs: Impacts and Opportunities." The objectives of the conference were: (1) Assess changes in economic structure of producers and the food supply chain; (2) Identify and examine impications for commodity checkoff programs; (3) Review and assess trends in the design of collective action organizations; (4) Provide assessment of recent evaluation studies of generic promotion programs; and (5) Provide a forum for discussion of current research and implications for managers, researchers and policy makers. It is part of a continuing dialogue among researchers, government officials and industry leaders to discuss issues and methods relating to commodity promotion activities.

Accomplishments

The semi-annual conference held in San Diego, California, March 17-18, 2005, was titled "The Economics of Commodity Promotion Programs: Lessons from California." The conference addressed the legal issues, alternatives to mandated programs and other issues in the economics of mandated commodity promotion programs. Some of the materials presented in this conference wil appear in a new book with the same title which will be published by Peter Lang Publishers in 2005. Presenters at the conference included representatives from academia, government and the private sector.

Accomplishments

"Obesity, Nutrition and Commodity Promotion" was the title of the semi-annual conference held in Savannah, Georgia on October 13-14, 2005. Presenters at the conference included representatives from: Dairy Marketing, Inc.; California Strawberry Commission; Florida Department of Citrus; Cattlemens Beef Promotion and Research Board; The McDonalds Corporation; and California Walnut Commission in addition to scientists from participating universities and the USDA-ERS. Presented papers will be available at NEC 63 website. Topics included, among others, health and nutrition research conducted by commodity group, promotion of health messages, consumers understanding of health claims and factors that influence food choices.

Accomplishments

The semi-annual conference held in Monterey, California on March 9-10, 2006 was titled "Commodity Promotion Evaluation Workshop for Researchers and Managers." The workshop was divided into four sessions. The first session provided an overview of quantitiative evaluation methods by scientists from particiapating universities. Industry managers and governement administrators presented expectations and concerns with current evaluation studies in the second session. Case studies of evaluations and how they could be used to assist managers in improved decision making and communication with board members were presented in the third and fourth sessions. There was a good distribution of and exchange among attendees from academia, government and industry.
